Make THIS, Not THAT! Hamburger Helper

hamburger helper

Like most of you, I too ate my fair share of Hamburger Helper growing up. Betty Crocker first introduced this to the market in 1971, when I was knee high.  It was to help busy moms in the kitchen get a complete meal on the table with less pans and in less time.

It consists of dried pasta with a packet of dried seasonings and powdered (so called) cheese.  Since then, they have introduced a Tuna and Chicken version, along with a few others.

I understand the concept behind this product and agree that there are times as moms we just want something easy, something simple, and something fast on the table.   So I created my own version and I have to tell you, it’s on the table in 20 minutes!

I can’t think of ANY reason to buy this product when it doesn’t save me any time, make it any easier or taste better than what I can make from scratch, can you?

There are FIFTY ingredients in this box!!!  FIFTY ….. and here they are:

Ingredients (50):

Pasta Enriched (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (Vitamin aB)) , Soybean(s) Oil Partially Hydrogenated, Corn Starch, Salt, Whey, Flour Enriched (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (Vitamin aB)) , Vegetable(s) Protein Hydrolyzed (Soy Protein Hydrolyzed, Corn Protein Hydrolyzed, Wheat Protein Hydrolyzed, Yeast Protein Hydrolyzed) , Maltodextrin, Sour Cream (Cream, Milk Non-Fat, Cultures) , Corn Syrup Dried, Color(s) Added, Onion(s) Dried, Whey Protein Concentrate, Tomato(es) Dried, Sugar, Monosodium Glutamate, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Sodium Caseinate, Corn Starch Modified, Garlic Dried, Flavor(s) Natural & Artificial, Lactic Acid, Parsley Dried, Beef Fat, Sodium Alginate, Yeast Autolyzed, Calcium Lactate, Egg(s), Yeast Extract, Mushroom(s) Powder Dried

Soybean Oil – Unless you get organic, which I’ll bet money this isn’t, Soy is a GMO.  Read more about that here.  Over 94% of soy crops are genetically modified.

Hydrolyzed Corn, Vegetable & Yeast Proteins – “A protein obtained from various foods (like soybeans, corn or wheat), is then broken down into amino acids by a chemical process called acid hydrolysis. Hydrolyzed plant or vegetable protein is used as a flavor enhancer in numerous processed foods like soups, chilis, sauces, stews and some meat products like frankfurters. Hydrolyzation of protein inevitably creates some (processed) free glutamic acid (MSG).” {source FoodFacts}

Flavors -The FDA does not require companies to disclose ingredients of color or flavor additives so long as all the chemicals in them are considered by the agency to be GRAS (“generally recognized as safe”) enabling companies to maintain secrecy of formulas. It also hides the fact that flavors often contain more ingredients than the foods to which they give taste.

Yeast (Autolyzed & Extract) – both synonyms for MSG

Like I said when I stared this post, WHY would I (or you) make Hamburger Helper from a box when we can make it from scratch in the same exact time AND we’re avoiding all those chemicals, trans fats and GMOs?

All it takes is ground beef, onion, garlic, milk, beef broth, spices and sour cream.  It’s one of the easiest, fastest meals to prepare.
