With the price of school lunches going up this year, it gives me even more reason to pack the kids lunches.
We are now up to $3.00 per lunch. If you ask me there’s a whole more I’d rather spend $120 a month on then those nutritionally void, sometimes questionable lunches the schools feel are perfectly ok to feed our kids.
But I also know what my kitchen looks like in the morning after packing these lunches! One brave day I’ll take a picture (but you have to swear not to show it to anyone, ok? ~ I trust you).
I decided this year to try something new. I am attempting to make all 5 lunches on Sunday! Yes, in one single day, in under 1 hour. Here’s how I did it:
- I made up my shopping list of what I needed to complete all my lunches. (Next time I do this I’ll do a blog including my list and how much it costs.)
- I went shopping and got it all – unpacked it, diced it, chopped it, cleaned it, washed it.
- I line up my divided containers from Ziploc. I got the idea from Lisa over at www.100daysofrealfood.com and until I make the leap to the Bento boxes this is where we’ll be for a while. I find them the cheapest at my grocery store of all places! They were on sale today for $2.74 for 2. You can’t beat that! They are BPA free and I can reuse them.
- I started packing. Some of the days did not include the sandwich because that can get soggy. So on Thursday and Friday I made the sandwiches that morning, but everything else was already done.
Here is what this weeks lunches looked like for us. Please be gentle in your comments. Our house is still a work in progress when it comes to eliminating processed foods. My daughter, as most of you know, is my thorn with her only eating white products. So some days it’s worth the battle and other days it just isn’t.
But you have to admit, it’s a WHOLE LOT BETTER than the school food, right?
Looking back I see they both had grapes almost every day! Funny …. but that’s what I had in the house so that’s what they got, right? And you can pack grapes a few days in advance too. Same thing with pretzels.
I like this system A LOT and I think I’ll be doing this quite often from now on.
What’s your system? Do you like to pack at night or in the morning? What do you pack?
