Welcome to Week 9 !
Last week we focused on restocking the fridge and pantry with better choices. The one thing I really noticed while becoming an avid label reader is the cheaper the product IS, the worse it is FOR you.
For example look at the these 2 ice creams. One is from Haagen Dazs and the other is Turkey Hill.
Haagen Dazs:
Ingredients (5)
Cream, Milk, Sugar, Egg(s) Yolks, Vanilla Natural
Turkey Hill Ingredients (14):
Milk, Cream, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Egg(s) Yolks, Whey, Milk Non-Fat, Mono and Diglycerides, Vanilla, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Yellow 5, Yellow 6
I have found this to be the same across the board whether it’s ice cream or crackers. We love ice cream in our house and still enjoy it on occasion. We just chose a higher quality brand that has less processing.
Ice cream isn’t hard to make. As a matter of fact I got an ice cream maker for my birthday and can’t stop making it.  Strawberry is our favorite during the spring/summer months. But there are times I don’t feel like making it and Haagen Dazs is our choice right now.
We still enjoy some things from the supermarket, but our focus has changed to find the least processed items. You may find these items may cost a little more than their counterparts.  But when you’re using real strawberries as opposed to strawberry flavoring it costs more.
We’re heading to the end of our 10 Week Challenge. You’ve been doing great. Are you ready for the next challenge?
______________________________________________________________
This weeks challenge is:
-
To Drink Only Real Beverages ~ they will be limited to coffee, tea, water, REAL organic juices, milk, and red wine
A TON of our calories come from the beverages we drink. I am so happy to say we don’t drink soda in our house on a regular basis. That is truly a rare thing. My kids don’t crave it and very very rarely ask for. But I know a lot of you struggle with this big time.
I have friends who if you take away their diet soda will go through physical with drawls. These next 7 days may be the most challenging for those of you!
Here’s a few side notes to get you started:
Coca Cola – there are 2 compounds in soda that prompted California to add to it’s list of known carcinogens in 2011.
Gatorade has been in the news due to people discovering their product had brominated vegetable oil in it which has been patented as a chemical used in flame retardants.
Energy Drinks can contain an alarming amount of caffeine due to the fact it isn’t regulated by the FDA. The sugars can also range from 21 to 34 grams in just 8 ounces!! Not to mention all the other stimulants that are in them.
